Meet the artist

Yannie Álvarez (she/her/hers) is a bilingual Mexican-American artist based in Oregon, USA. She recently graduated with her B.F.A in Art and Design from Western Oregon University.

The majority of her work consists of colorful paintings but balances this aspect by creating minimalistic digital art. Over the past few years, she has been exploring painting different themes including immigration, identity and mental health.

Through out life, she says she never felt much pride with being Mexican-American. She always felt out of place, always relating to the quote "too American for the Mexicans, too Mexican for the Americans" and began to explore how to communicate this through art.

Recently, she participated in the Hostile Terrain Exhibit which highlights the deaths of migrants crossing the US-MX border. Having been involved in the curating and commemorating of the exhibit, she says that it has opened up her perspective and inspired her to have more pride in being Latina and strives to change the topics of her pieces to match this growth.

She is currently completing a residency at The Arts Center in Corvallis, OR.
